By the end of this review, you'll have a better understanding of whether or not Super Duolingo is worth it for you in 2023.
What is Super Duolingo?
Super Duolingo is the premium subscription service offered by the popular language learning app, Duolingo. It replaced Duolingo Plus in 2022 and offers some exclusive features that are not available in the free version. With Super Duolingo, you can enjoy an ad-free language learning experience, unlimited hearts and mistakes review, among other benefits. It is an excellent option for learners who want a more enhanced language learning experience.
Is Super Duolingo the same as Duolingo Plus?
If you're a Duolingo Plus subscriber, you might be wondering if there's any difference between Duolingo Plus and Super Duolingo. The answer is no. Super Duolingo and Duolingo Plus are essentially the same, with all the features being identical. The only difference is the name and the theme. Super Duolingo has a more colourful, futuristic appearance compared to the spacey, galactic vibe of Plus.
How to Get Super Duolingo
If you are a Duolingo user, you have the option to upgrade to a premium membership. As of February 2023, Super Duolingo is available to most users. However, in some regions, Duolingo may still offer Duolingo Plus. Keep in mind that both memberships are exactly the same, with the same features and cost. The only difference is the name and appearance.
Mobile
Upgrading to Super Duolingo on mobile is easy. Here's how to do it on iOS:
Open the Duolingo app and tap on the gems icon.
At the top, you should have the option to try Super Duolingo with a two-week free trial. Tap "try two weeks for free."
Follow the instructions to start your free trial.
You will be prompted to enter your payment details, after which your free trial will start. At the end of your free trial, you will convert to the paid plan unless you cancel beforehand.
The process may differ slightly on Android devices, but it should be similar for the most part.
Desktop
If you're signing up for Super Duolingo on desktop, the process is similar to mobile, with the main difference being that you'll be paying Duolingo directly rather than through the App Store/Google Play Store.
Go to your Duolingo homepage and click "get Super."
Follow the instructions to sign up.
You'll start off with a two-week free trial, after which you'll be charged unless you cancel beforehand.
Whether you're signing up on mobile or desktop, upgrading to Super Duolingo is a simple process that gives you access to all the premium features.
How much does Super Duolingo cost?
Super Duolingo offers both individual and family plans, and the cost of your subscription will depend on a few factors such as where you are and how long you subscribe for. Here are the starting prices for Super Duolingo in 2023:
In the USA, Super Duolingo starts from $6.99 per month.
In the UK, Super Duolingo starts from £4.99 per month.
In Australia, Super Duolingo starts from $10.83 AUD per month.
In Canada, Super Duolingo starts from $9.99 CAD per month.
In the EU, Super Duolingo starts from €7.33 per month.
These prices are based on a 12-month subscription. If you opt for a monthly subscription, the cost per month will be slightly higher. Unfortunately, there is currently no lifetime plan for Super Duolingo.
Super Duolingo Family Plan
If you want to save on the yearly cost of Super Duolingo, you might consider signing up for a Family Plan. With a Family Plan, you can join forces with up to 5 other people, such as friends or family, to take advantage of the savings.
The Family Plan is available in the UK for £89.99 per year. When split across 6 people, the cost per person is just £14.99 per year, or £1.24 per month. This is a significant saving compared to the individual plan and is a great way for families to learn together while saving money.
Wait, isn’t Duolingo supposed to be free?
If you're wondering if Duolingo is free, the answer is yes. You can access complete language paths, stories, audio lessons, and leagues with the free membership. However, Duolingo also offers a paid version called Super Duolingo, which is an optional bolt-on.
While the free version is enough to get you where you want to go, it does come with a few drawbacks. You'll have to deal with ads and the heart system, which limits how many mistakes you can make before you have to wait to continue. If these don't bother you, then you probably won't be interested in Super Duolingo.
Overall, Duolingo is a great language learning app that you can use for free. If you want to support the app and get some extra features, then Super Duolingo might be worth checking out.
Why You Might Resist Subscribing to Super Duolingo
If you're like me, you might resist subscribing to the premium membership for Duolingo for a few reasons. Firstly, Duolingo's mission is to provide free language education to everyone. It's hard to justify paying for a premium service when the core product is free. Additionally, the premium membership isn't cheap, making it difficult to justify the cost.
However, the free plan is still an excellent deal. You get access to complete courses in almost 40 languages across multiple devices. The courses are designed to be fun and accessible, making it easy to learn anywhere, anytime.
Another reason you might resist subscribing is that the free version of Duolingo already offers a lot of features. For example, you can track your progress, set daily goals, and compete with friends.
Despite all these reasons, the owl can be persuasive, and eventually, you might give in and subscribe to the premium membership. The premium membership offers additional features such as ad-free learning, unlimited hearts, and offline access.
Ultimately, whether you should subscribe to the premium membership depends on your needs and preferences. If you're happy with the free version of Duolingo and don't mind the occasional ad, then there's no need to subscribe. However, if you want to take your language learning to the next level and enjoy a more seamless learning experience, then the premium membership might be worth it.
What You Get with Super Duolingo
Super Duolingo offers a range of features that can enhance your language learning experience. Some of the features that you can enjoy with Super Duolingo include:
Unlimited hearts to help you learn from your mistakes without any restrictions.
Unlimited legendary level attempts that allow you to take on the most challenging levels as many times as you need.
Unlimited timed challenge attempts that let you practice your skills under pressure.
Complete access to the practice hub/personalized practice that provides you with a tailored learning experience.
Monthly streak repair that helps you maintain your progress even if you miss a day of practice.
Super Duolingo app icon that lets you show off your status as a Super member.
Super Duolingo also removes ads, so you can enjoy an ad-free experience.
It's worth noting that Duolingo frequently adds new features, some of which are exclusive to Super members. While these features typically roll out on IOS before Android, they are available on both operating systems. With Super Duolingo, you can enjoy a newer, faster, and more personalised learning experience.
Why You Should Consider Subscribing
If you're considering whether Super Duolingo is worth the cost, it's essential to understand how it can enhance your language learning experience. Here are three areas where Super Duolingo can make a significant difference to your journey.
Less Punishing
By far, the most significant benefit of Super Duolingo is the removal of the heart system. The heart system can be frustrating and demotivating, punishing you for making mistakes. With Super Duolingo, you have unlimited hearts, so you can make mistakes without worrying about losing your progress.
Making mistakes is a crucial part of learning a language, and the heart system can put up roadblocks that hinder your progress. With Super Duolingo, you can fully commit to learning your language without worrying about losing your license to learn.
More Convenient
Super Duolingo removes ads, making your language learning experience smoother and quicker. It also eliminates the wait time for heart refills, so you can dive into your lessons whenever and wherever you want. These perks may seem small, but together they can make a significant difference to the flow and feel of your lessons.
More Supportive
Super Duolingo offers several features that can enhance your language learning experience. The Practice Hub, for instance, lets you revisit questions you got wrong in previous lessons and challenges you with tough exercises you might not have encountered yet. It even breaks it down into listening and speaking exercises, so you can tailor your practice sessions to your needs.
Additionally, Super Duolingo puts you at the front of the queue for new features, so you can stay ahead of the curve. While some of the premium features may seem pointless, others are genuinely useful.
Overall, Super Duolingo creates an environment in which making mistakes is encouraged, and you can practice without fear of punishment. It's more convenient and supportive than the free membership, making it a worthwhile investment for anyone serious about learning a language.

How to Get Super Duolingo for Free
If you're a language learner on a budget, you'll be pleased to know that there are several ways to get Super Duolingo for free. Here are three methods you can try:
1. Take Duolingo's 14-day free trial
One of the easiest ways to get Super Duolingo for free is to take advantage of Duolingo's 14-day free trial. To do this, simply tap on one of the Super features, such as unlimited hearts or Practice Hub. You'll then see the Super Duolingo upgrade screen, where you should see the option to TRY FOR $0.00. Tap this, sign up, and your 14-day free trial will begin immediately.
2. Look out for promo codes
Another way to get Super Duolingo for free is to keep an eye out for promo codes. Duolingo occasionally releases codes that allow you to get a Super Duolingo subscription for free. For example, in September 2022, Duolingo offered a 30-day free trial of Super Duolingo using the promo code DRACARYS. Keep in mind that you'll usually need to enter payment details when using promo codes. However, as long as you cancel before the trial ends, you won't be charged.
3. Extend your streak
Extending your streak not only gets you cool rewards from the streak society, but it can also get you free trials of Super Duolingo. These trials are usually shorter than the 14-day trial, lasting no more than three days at a time. They're also more sporadic. Users have reported receiving free trials at 7 days, 50 days, 100 days, and 150 days.
By using one or more of these methods, you can enjoy the benefits of Super Duolingo without spending a penny. Just remember to cancel your subscription before the trial period ends to avoid being charged.
Over to you
When it comes to deciding whether Super Duolingo is worth the price, it's a personal decision that depends on your priorities, goals, and circumstances. While Super Duolingo is a premium service that offers additional features, it won't make you fluent in your target language on its own. Learning a language requires a balanced diet of study and application.
If you're just starting out on your language-learning journey, not ready to commit to Duolingo or your target language long-term, prefer to spend your money on other resources, or are looking to cut back on expenses, then sticking with the free membership is your best bet. Similarly, if you're happy with the free membership and don't mind the heart system, ads, etc., then there's no need to upgrade.
However, if you've been using Duolingo for a while, use it every day, and are frustrated with the heart system, ads, etc., then you should consider subscribing to Super Duolingo. The extra features, such as unlimited hearts, offline lessons, and mastery quizzes, can enhance your learning experience. If you're in a position where you can justify the cost financially, then it's worth considering.
If you're still undecided, we highly recommend taking advantage of a Super Duolingo free trial. Duolingo usually offers them on a 14-day basis, which is plenty of time to get a feel for the service and make an informed decision as to whether it's worth subscribing. If the 14 days isn't enough or they aren't offering free trials, then it might be worth subscribing for a month to give yourself a bit more time to figure out if it's the right membership for you.
In our experience, Super Duolingo is worth it if you use it frequently and can justify the cost. For example, if you use Super Duolingo every day for roughly 10-30 minutes, it works out at roughly £0.16 a day over the course of the year, which is pretty good value. However, it's worth noting that Super Duolingo isn't as good as it used to be, as Duolingo has removed some features, such as offline lessons and mastery quizzes, without really adding any new ones, yet have kept the pricing the same. So, it's important to weigh the pros and cons and decide for yourself if Super Duolingo is worth it.
Overall, the decision to upgrade to Super Duolingo is a personal one that depends on your circumstances. We hope that this guide has helped you make an informed decision and that you continue to enjoy learning your target language with Duolingo.
Have Your Say!
Now it's your turn to tell us what you think about Super Duolingo. Are you willing to subscribe to the premium tier or are you satisfied with the free membership? Do you prefer it to Plus? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
So far I’ve enjoyed Duolingo but as I haven’t used accented characters before, I had no idea how to create them so lost a lot of hearts because I had missed the accent. I find that really disappointing on the part of Duolingo, plus the free version lacks so much of the super version but I can’t afford to upgrade, I wish they would price it a bit more competitively so more people could afford it.
